DTI

The Government is strongly committed to increasing renewable energy usage in order to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thereby contribute to national and international targets for emissions reductions. Increasing usage of the various renewables technologies will also contribute to greater diversity in our energy supply. The increasing importance attached to this form of energy production was recently highlighted in the Energy White Paper.

A comprehensive framework of financial and non-financial measures has been put in place to synergise our business, technology and environmental objectives. This section of the website will focus on the non-financial mechanisms by which we hope to promote the greater use of renewables.

Our target is that by 2010, 10% of the UK's electricity sales will come from sources eligible for the Renewables Obligation. (Click on link or link below to learn more about the Renewables Obligation). The Obligation is itself underpinned by capital grants for emerging technologies, and our New & Renewable Energy R&D programme.
