The Non - Food Uses of Crops: Supply Chain Assessment and Development R&D Programme was set up in order to acquire and disseminate knowledge on industrial scale application of non-food crop technologies. Its purpose was to support targeted collaborative projects that examine the non-food crop technology at a commercially relevant scale.
A Programme Review took place on Wednesday 27 June 2007 at the DTI Conference Centre in London. The aims of this meeting was to present the results from the projects that were supported under this programme and to assess whether the programme's objectives have been met.
The subsequent Report of the NF06 Review is now available.

Irrigation Best Practice: Water Management for Potatoes A Guide for Growers
Water is a vital component of potato production. It is essential to maximise both yield and quality. This Best Practice Guide aims to address the key aspects of water and irrigation management appropriate to potato production.
Emphasis is given to correct management of water application, both in terms of scheduling and field equipment. This Guide also focuses on the crop quality aspects of irrigation, especially as it affects diseases, pests, disorders and damage.
Environmental considerations are playing an increasing role in the production and marketing of all crops, including potatoes. Careful and effective irrigation management will form part of these considerations, as well as helping the grower to continue producing profitable potato crops.
Copies of the best practice guide can be obtained by emailing Ian.Senior@defra.gsi.gov.uk

REPORT ON SAFEGUARDING THE FUTURE OF THE NATIONAL FRUIT COLLECTIONS
Defra is holding an open meeting to discuss a report, recently completed for Defra by Imperial College at Wye, on safeguarding the future of the National Fruit Collections. The meeting will consist of a presentation from the report?s authors followed by question and answer session. It is our intention to make the meeting open to others on application although we are limited by the size of the room, and by the need to keep the meeting small enough to ensure good audience interaction. The meeting will take place on the morning of 15 December in London, and will end with a lunch.
There are a limited number of spaces available to the public. Please contact horticulture@defra.gsi.gov.uk if you would like to come.
For further information on the project (code number GC0137STF) go to the Defra website: Project search , and find "GC0137" using the search facility provided. A downloadable version of the final report and associated documents is available on-line.

Wheat Genetic Improvment Network's Annual Stakeholder Meeting
22 November 2005
The WGIN "Stakeholders' Forum" meets annually and comprises the full management team, breeders, other research customers(eg. HGCA, SCRI )and scientists with shared interests and "end-users" such as millers, bakers and food processors to provide a critique of past activities and future plans. Together, these groups represent the substantial majority of the UK's expertise related to wheat genetics, breeding and end use. The meeting affords an opportunity to discuss existing problems and identify resources and approaches to address them. The meeting also serves as an opportunity to report on progress in WGIN and other relevant R&D.
About The Wheat Genetic Improvement Network - WGIN is a Defra-funded project that aims to generate pre-breeding material carrying novel traits to breeders. It also facilitates access to advanced breeding technologies thereby ensuring the means are available to produce new, improved wheat varieties, which are essential to improving the sustainability of wheat production. The project co-ordinates and improves communication between the research base and industry. For information on participating, please contact wgin.defra@bbsrc.ac.uk.
